The Winter 2019-2020 issue of the journal Chiropractic History includes an article by Francis about the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic.

Abstract: In 2017 the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) became the AECC University College, a change in name which denoted new status and an important transition in the institution’s development. The AECC University College, formally the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic, is the oldest existing chiropractic school in Europe. Many of the chiropractors who practice in Europe today were trained at the AECC and its graduates have been influential in shaping the chiropractic profession not only within Europe, but also globally. Anthony Metcalfe, a graduate of the AECC, served as president of the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) between 2004 and 2006. The current secretary general of the WFC, Richard Brown, is a graduate of the AECC. This paper provides an overview of the history of the School from its origins to the attainment of university college title.

We are pleased to announce that Rachel Wilson (our Practice Manager) has been made a Fellow of the Association of Medical Secretaries, Practice Managers, Administrators and Receptionists (AMSPAR). This recognizes both formal qualification and length of service in the healthcare field.

Chiropractic Numbers

Globally there are about 100,000 people working as chiropractors. Most practise in North America, where chiropractic originated. In the UK the title chiropractor is protected under law. There are fewer than 3,500 registered chiropractors in the UK and only about a dozen of these work in Cumbria.

We would like to thank the ladies of the Broughton Mills and Woodland branch of the Women’s Institute for inviting us to speak on Wednesday. We really enjoyed exploring the history of manipulation with the group.

1895

According to Daniel David Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, chiropractic had its beginning on 18 September 1895 with the treatment of a man named Harvey Lillard in Davenport, Iowa, USA. The significance of 1895 is reflected in our clinic’s telephone number.

Science and Charity (Pablo Picasso, 1897)

One of the images which we own is a print of an early work by Picasso entitled ‘Science and Charity’. It reminds us that good medicine has science as a foundation, but that without a caring and empathetic approach it is wanting. Chiropractic is the same.
