Manibus

We are pleased to announce the publication of Manibus: Developments in the History of Joint Manipulative Practice by Francis Wilson, our chiropractor. If you would like to learn more about the history of hands-on treatments in medicine, physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic we suggest taking a look.

The Manibus project is not-for-profit and privately funded by its author. It is a free web-based resource dedicated to those of all professions who practise joint manipulation in the hope that it will foster increased understanding and co-operation.

Living with COVID-19

As the Government reduces regulations relating to COVID-19, at Furness Chiropractic we remain vigilant. Please bear in mind that some of our patients are clinically vulnerable. Please do not bring the virus into the practice if you can help it.

British Chiropractic Association

In the Spring of 2021 the British Chiropractic Association began a repositioning project to define and set its direction for the future. At its conference in November 2021 the President and Chief Executive announced that the Association would be presenting itself as the home for chiropractors who put patients first. Francis is a fellow of the British Chiropractic Association.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for bone and muscle health. We get some vitamin D through our diet, but much of what we need is produced in the skin where the protein 7-dehydrocholesterol is converted into vitamin D3 under the influence of sunlight. During the spring and summer our bodies are normally able to make all the vitamin D that we need, but in the autumn and winter levels of vitamin D can fall. As it can be difficult to obtain a sufficient amount of vitamin D from food alone, the NHS recommends that people consider taking a daily 10 microgram (µg) vitamin D supplement in the autumn and winter months.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week begins on 10th May. This year’s theme is nature. Getting out into the countryside and walking can improve our mental and physical health. As the weather starts to warm up, we encourage you to make the most of the wonderful places around us.

Exercise is Good for You (Laziness is Not)

Moderate exercise is good for health. Activity not only helps to mobilize joints and keep muscles working properly, it also has other health benefits. Exercise can help to improve mood and reduce the risk of serious health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. There is no one size fits all when it comes to exercise, and it is possible to overdo it, but by keeping active we can help to keep ourselves well.

The World Federation of Chiropractic

The World Federation of Chiropractic is committed to a future for chiropractic which is evidence-based, people-centred, interprofessional and collaborative. This is a vision which we support at Furness Chiropractic. Evidence-based practice involves the integration of best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values. As well as research, your values and wishes as a patient inform the care which we provide. Chiropractors are part of the health care community. We believe in working with other professionals as part of that community.

Chiropractic Education

In the UK students normally study for at least four years to gain a Master’s degree as a route of entry into the chiropractic profession. In addition to the quality assurance measures inherent to the university system, the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) has a legal responsibility to assess the quality of chiropractic educational programmes. It works to ensure that the interests of patients are prioritized and that chiropractors are fit to practice. The GCC is accountable to Parliament.
